Our mission is to translate industrial collaborator and Rutgers-derived research discoveries for the public good, foster ties between academic, industrial and governmental labs, provide training for the region's next generation entrepreneurial workforce, and accelerate cross-disciplinary science to technology breakthroughs and ensure opportunities for innovation commercialization.
To enable this mission, the MDDC provides the following services:
Service | Description |
Device Prototyping | Provide prototyping and proof-of-concept testing for collaborators. |
Commercialization Funding | Provide funding at strategic milestones to move IP productively toward commercialization. These funds should support activities such as proof-of-concept, prototyping, testing/trials, commercialization support services (legal, financial), seed funding for management team formation, etc. |
Commercialization Training | Provide classroom/web training for students and faculty that introduces a framework for readying technology innovations for commercialization (courses, boot camp). Define the process for commercialization, from the researcher's perspective, outlining relevant milestones, Rutgers/external support available at each milestone, available tools for successful navigation of the commercialization process, and templates for efficient execution. |
Commercialization Advisory/Mentorship Boards | Expert advisory board with representation from various medical device sectors recruited to provide feedback to researchers that have embarked upon a commercialization journey. |
Commercialization Strategy Guidance | Provide the researcher with guidance regarding relevant commercialization strategy (license, spin-off) and indicate key stakeholder roles at each stage. Such strategy should be based upon a keen assessment of market trends, IP relevance, financial requirements, etc. |
Market Analysis / Trending | Perform analysis regarding market potential of the proposed innovations and guide the researcher regarding commercial application(s)/required re-orientation for increased chance of success. |
Spin-off Development Support | Provide researcher with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the formation, mentoring and funding of spinoff endeavors. Provide support to researchers in development of a framework for a new company, including attaining seed funding, development of the management team, identification of suitable facilities, selection of board members, etc. |
Business Plan Development Support | Provide guidance and support to researchers for development of strategic business documentation and relevant business-focused presentations (potential to work with RBS). |
Grant Application Support | Apprise researchers regarding grant opportunities that directly support maturation/commercialization of their research and provide support for the grant application process inclusive of template information, etc, and assist researchers in development of new/small business grants such as SBIR/STTR, etc |
